Tesla has announced a sweeping recall affecting nearly all Cybertrucks delivered to date, citing a serious safety risk involving improperly secured trim panels. The recall impacts approximately 46,000 vehicles produced in the 2024 and early 2025 model years, marking the eighth recall for the Cybertruck since its highly anticipated launch in late 2023.
At the center of the issue is a component known as the cant rail trim, a stainless-steel panel that runs along the top edge of the vehicle. According to documents filed with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), these panels were affixed using a structural adhesive that, in some cases, has failed to hold. The result: the trim may detach from the vehicle while in motion, posing a hazard to both the driver and others on the road.
Tesla has stated that the problem is not linked to crashes or injuries, but the company is moving quickly to correct the flaw. Affected owners will be contacted beginning May 19, 2025, and repairs will be completed at no cost. The fix involves replacing the cant rail assembly, applying a stronger adhesive, and adding a mechanical fastener (bolt) to ensure long-term security.
The recall is the latest in a string of early issues for the Cybertruck. Previous recalls have included problems with the accelerator pedal, windshield wiper motor, and exterior lighting. While these are not uncommon for new vehicle platforms, especially those featuring new materials and manufacturing processes, the frequency and visibility of these problems have raised questions about Tesla’s quality control and production scaling efforts.
Tesla has not issued a public statement regarding the recall, but according to internal service bulletins, the company is urging owners not to attempt any repairs themselves.
The Cybertruck, which features a striking stainless-steel exoskeleton and angular design, remains one of the most polarizing vehicles on the market. Its launch was met with immense fanfare and demand, but continued production delays and early quality issues have tempered enthusiasm.
As of now, deliveries continue, and Tesla has not paused production. However, analysts suggest that the company will need to tighten up manufacturing standards if it wants to meet both demand and safety expectations for its most radical vehicle to date.
For Cybertruck owners, Tesla has published more information and VIN lookup tools on its official website to determine if their vehicle is affected by the recall.
