Stock Market Holidays 2025: Are NSE, BSE Open or Closed on May 1 for Maharashtra Day?

MUMBAI — The floor of the Bombay Stock Exchange sits quiet today, May 1, 2025, and the National Stock Exchange’s digital ticker is frozen. No traders shouting orders, no screens flashing green and red. It’s Maharashtra Day, and both of India’s major stock exchanges have shut their doors to mark the occasion.

This isn’t just a random day off. Maharashtra Day commemorates the creation of the state in 1960, when the Samyukta Maharashtra Movement carved out a Marathi-speaking homeland after years of agitation. It’s a public holiday across the state, with parades at Shivaji Park and government offices shuttered. The BSE and NSE, both headquartered in Mumbai, follow suit, halting all trading—equity, derivatives, securities lending, you name it. Even the Multi Commodity Exchange takes a half-day breather, staying closed for the morning session and only firing up in the evening.

The holiday’s no surprise. Both exchanges publish their 2025 calendars well in advance, and May 1 was flagged as a non-trading day months ago. It’s one of 14 market holidays this year, a list that includes heavyweights like Diwali on October 21 and Independence Day on August 15. On Diwali, traders will get a special one-hour Muhurat Trading session, but for Maharashtra Day, it’s a full stop. No exceptions.

While the markets snooze, corporate India doesn’t entirely pause. Some big players—Adani Enterprises, Adani Ports, Home First Finance—are still dropping their fourth-quarter results today. Investors will have to wait until tomorrow to react, though, when the BSE’s Sensex and NSE’s Nifty spring back to life.

For the record, the next market holiday isn’t far off. Mark August 15 for Independence Day, followed by Ganesh Chaturthi on August 27. The full lineup runs through Christmas on December 25, with each date locked in by the exchanges’ official schedules.

That’s the deal for May 1, 2025: NSE and BSE are closed, Maharashtra Day is in full swing, and the trading floor is as silent as a Mumbai street at dawn.
