In a galaxy not so far away, Star Wars fans are gearing up for a wild ride. The new animated series, Star Wars: Tales of the Underworld, is set to premiere its first two episodes on May 2, 2025, inside Fortnite—two days before it hits Disney+ on May 4. This marks the first time a Disney+ series will debut in a video game, a bold move that’s got gamers and Jedi wannabes buzzing.
The show, a six-episode anthology of animated shorts, dives into the grimy underbelly of the Star Wars universe. It follows two iconic villains: Asajj Ventress, a former assassin dodging her past with a surprise ally, and Cad Bane, a grizzled outlaw facing off with an old buddy turned lawman. Crafted by Lucasfilm veteran Dave Filoni, the series builds on the style of The Clone Wars and continues the Tales saga that kicked off with Tales of the Jedi in 2022 and Tales of the Empire in 2024.
Fortnite’s Star Wars Watch Party island, launching May 2, is where the action’s at. Starting at 10 a.m. ET, players can stream the episodes in a virtual theater built with Unreal Editor for Fortnite, decked out with official Star Wars assets to mimic that galaxy far, tribunals far away. But it’s not just about kicking back with popcorn—players can also grab lightsabers and blasters to fend off Stormtroopers in a Battle Arena, racking up points and leaderboard bragging rights. The island stays live until May 11, giving fans a nine-day window to catch the episodes.
Epic Games and Disney are pulling out all the stops for this collab, dubbed their biggest Star Wars venture yet. Fortnite’s Galactic Battle season, also starting May 2, transforms the Battle Royale mode with weekly Star Wars content. Players can suit up as Darth Jar Jar or Emperor Palpatine, pilot X-wings or TIE Fighters, and gear up for a live in-game event called Death Star Sabotage. To sweeten the deal, linking Epic Games and MyDisney accounts unlocks a First Order Stormtrooper outfit, with more perks promised down the line. Watch both episodes on the island, and you’ll snag an Asajj Ventress loading screen within 72 hours.
This isn’t just a one-off stunt. Disney’s $1.5 billion stake in Epic Games, announced in March 2024, is fueling plans for a new “games and entertainment universe” tied to Fortnite, blending Disney’s Star Wars, Marvel, and Pixar IPs. The Fortnite premiere is a test run for what’s coming—a future where fans can play, watch, and connect in one digital sandbox.
The series officially lands on Disney+ on May 4, 2025, timed for the annual Star Wars celebration. All six episodes will be available to stream exclusively on the platform.
