Lumberton Township Mayor Gina LaPlaca has been arrested and charged with driving under the influence (DUI), reckless driving, and child endangerment after allegedly driving while intoxicated with her two-year-old son in the vehicle. The incident occurred on St. Patrick’s Day, March 17, 2025, when police were alerted about an erratic driver nearly hitting a utility pole.
Authorities tracked LaPlaca’s vehicle to her home, where they discovered her child secured in the back seat and an open container of alcohol inside the car. Reports indicate that she admitted to consuming alcohol before picking up her son from daycare. Following her arrest, LaPlaca was booked and later released on bail.
LaPlaca, 45, has served as mayor of Lumberton since 2021 and is also the chair of the Lumberton Township Democratic Committee. Previously, she held a government position in Neptune Township but resigned, citing a shifting political environment. The arrest has sparked controversy, with some community members calling for her resignation while others urge support as she seeks treatment.
Her husband, Jason Carty, released a statement acknowledging that she has been struggling with addiction and is now seeking professional help. He requested privacy and understanding for their family during this difficult time.
LaPlaca is scheduled to appear in court on April 28 to face the charges. The case has prompted discussions on leadership accountability and the personal struggles public officials face.
