Lester Holt Announces Departure from 'NBC Nightly News' After a Decade

New York, NY – Veteran journalist Lester Holt has announced his decision to step down as the anchor of 'NBC Nightly News', concluding a remarkable ten-year tenure that solidified his position as a trusted voice in American journalism. Holt, 65, will transition to a full-time role at 'Dateline NBC', where he has served as the principal anchor since 2011.

A Decade of Trusted Journalism

Holt took over the anchor chair of 'NBC Nightly News' in 2015, following the departure of Brian Williams. During his tenure, he guided viewers through significant global events, including presidential elections, the COVID-19 pandemic, and international conflicts. His steadfast reporting and calm demeanor earned him widespread respect and trust.

Reflecting on his time at 'Nightly News', Holt shared in a memo to staff:

"After 10 years, 17 if you include my years on the weekends, the time has come for me to step away from my role as anchor of 'Nightly News'. It has truly been the honor of a lifetime to work with each of you every day, keeping journalism as our true north and our viewers at the center of everything we do."

Transition to 'Dateline NBC'

While stepping down from 'Nightly News', Holt is not retiring. He will dedicate his efforts to 'Dateline NBC', focusing on in-depth investigative reporting and long-form storytelling. This move aligns with his passion for uncovering complex narratives and delivering comprehensive news coverage.

Network Changes and Successor Speculation

Holt's departure is part of a series of significant shifts within NBC News. The network has yet to announce his successor, but speculation points to journalists such as Tom Llamas and Hallie Jackson as potential candidates. These changes reflect NBC's efforts to adapt to the evolving media landscape and viewer preferences.

A Legacy of Excellence

Joining NBC News in 2000, Holt's career spans over two decades with the network. Beyond 'Nightly News' and 'Dateline', he has contributed to various programs, including 'Weekend Today' and 'NBC Nightly News' weekend editions. His commitment to journalistic integrity and storytelling has left an indelible mark on the industry.

As Holt prepares to embark on this new chapter, viewers and colleagues alike celebrate his contributions and look forward to his continued work on 'Dateline NBC'.
