The University of North Carolina (UNC) has announced the appointment of Jim Tanner as the General Manager of its men's basketball program. Tanner, a highly respected sports agent and UNC alumnus, will play a key role in shaping the future of Tar Heel basketball amid the changing landscape of college athletics.
A Tar Heel’s Journey Back to UNC
Jim Tanner’s deep connection to UNC dates back to his undergraduate years. A native of High Point, North Carolina, Tanner graduated in 1990 as a Morehead-Cain Scholar with a degree in English and a minor in speech communication. His time at UNC, he recalls, provided the “perfect college experience,” blending strong academics, a diverse student community, and a passion for sports.
Since then, Tanner has built an illustrious career as a top sports agent, representing NBA legends such as Tim Duncan, Ray Allen, and Grant Hill. As the founder of Tandem Sports + Entertainment, he has helped guide professional athletes in both their on- and off-court careers. Certified by both the National Basketball Players Association (NBPA) and the Women's National Basketball Players Association (WNBPA), Tanner is well-versed in athlete management and career development.
A New Role in Collegiate Basketball
Tanner’s appointment comes as UNC’s basketball program, under head coach Hubert Davis, looks to navigate new challenges, including the evolving Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL) landscape, the transfer portal, and international recruiting.
“The old model for Carolina basketball just doesn’t work anymore; it’s not sustainable,” Coach Davis stated, emphasizing the need for a General Manager to oversee critical program aspects beyond coaching. Tanner’s expertise in player representation and strategic planning makes him an ideal fit for the role.
Looking Ahead
Tanner’s leadership is expected to provide a fresh perspective for Tar Heel basketball, ensuring that student-athletes receive the support they need to thrive both academically and athletically. His experience in contract negotiations, branding, and player development will be instrumental in strengthening UNC’s position as a powerhouse in college basketball.
This appointment signals UNC’s commitment to adapting to modern collegiate sports while upholding the rich traditions of Tar Heel basketball. With Tanner’s vision and expertise, the program is well-positioned for success in the evolving landscape of college athletics.
