Gene Hackman’s and Wife Betsy Arakawa Found Dead with Signs of Mummification

In a tragic discovery on February 26, 2025, renowned actor Gene Hackman and his wife, Betsy Arakawa, were found deceased in their Santa Fe, New Mexico residence. The couple's bodies, along with one of their pet dogs, were located by maintenance workers who had not seen them for approximately two weeks. Authorities have described the circumstances surrounding their deaths as "suspicious," prompting a thorough investigation.

According to an affidavit obtained by PEOPLE, Betsy Arakawa's body exhibited significant signs of decomposition, including facial bloating and mummification of both hands and feet. Mummification occurs when bodily tissues undergo dehydration, leading to a shrunken and hardened appearance. This process is often accelerated in environments that are hot and dry. In Arakawa's case, the presence of a space heater near her body may have contributed to the localized mummification observed.

The discovery of prescription pills near Arakawa's body has raised additional questions. While initial speculations considered carbon monoxide poisoning as a potential cause, subsequent investigations have found no evidence of gas leaks in the home. The exact causes of death for both Hackman and Arakawa remain undetermined, with autopsy results pending.

Mummification in modern forensic contexts is relatively rare and typically results from specific environmental conditions that promote rapid dehydration of tissues. The process can preserve remains for extended periods, complicating the determination of time and cause of death. In this case, the advanced state of decomposition suggests that the couple had been deceased for an extended period before their discovery.

Gene Hackman, aged 95, was a celebrated figure in Hollywood, known for his roles in films such as "The French Connection" and "Unforgiven." His wife, Betsy Arakawa, 64, was a classical pianist. The couple had been married since 1991 and led a relatively private life in their New Mexico home.

The Santa Fe County Sheriff's Office continues to investigate the circumstances surrounding their deaths. Authorities have emphasized the need for a comprehensive examination to rule out foul play and determine the exact sequence of events leading to this unfortunate incident.
