Elon Musk Confirms ‘Massive Cyberattack’ as X Faces Multiple Outages

Elon Musk has revealed that X (formerly Twitter) was hit by a “massive cyberattack” today, leading to at least four significant outages, disrupting access for thousands of users worldwide.

Timeline of Outages

  • First Outage (5:30 AM ET): Users began reporting issues accessing the platform.
  • Second Outage (10:00 AM ET): A surge in complaints appeared on Downdetector.
  • Third Outage (12:00 PM ET): Over 40,000 users worldwide experienced login failures and content loading issues.
  • Fourth Outage (Afternoon): Continued intermittent disruptions left users frustrated.

According to Downdetector, 56% of the reported issues were linked to the X mobile app, while 33% affected website access.

Musk’s Response: ‘This Was a Large-Scale Attack’

Musk took to X to address the situation, stating:

“There was (still is) a massive cyberattack against X. We get attacked every day, but this was done with a lot of resources. Either a large, coordinated group and/or a country is involved.”

While Musk did not specify the attackers, cybersecurity analysts suspect it could be a state-backed operation or a well-funded hacker group.

Impact on Users

During the outages, users faced:

Login issues
Content not loading
Failure to post updates
Slow performance on both the app and desktop

Many frustrated users flocked to other platforms like Reddit and Telegram to vent about the widespread disruptions.

Is X Being Targeted?

This latest cyberattack follows a pattern of increasing digital threats against Musk’s platforms, raising concerns about the security vulnerabilities of X.

While the X technical team is actively working to restore full functionality, users may continue experiencing disruptions as countermeasures are deployed.

Musk has not ruled out further investigations into the source of the attack, and experts warn that if state actors are involved, this could escalate into a major cybersecurity issue.

For now, X remains under siege—and the platform’s ability to withstand future attacks will be a key test of its resilience.
