The world has lost a cultural icon. Aurelio Martínez, the celebrated Garifuna musician, activist, and former Honduran congressman, tragically died in a plane crash on March 17, 2025. He was 55 years old.
The Tragic Accident
Martínez was among 12 people killed when a Jetstream 41 aircraft, operated by Lanhsa Airlines, crashed shortly after takeoff from Roatán, Honduras. The plane was headed for La Ceiba, but reports suggest it experienced a mechanical failure, leading to the devastating crash. Five passengers survived and are currently receiving treatment.
