According to 49ers President of Football Operations/General Manager John Lynch provided key injury updates on Trent Williams, Christian McCaffrey, and Brandon Aiyuk during his press conference at the 2025 NFL Scouting Combine. The trio, who faced season-ending injuries in 2024, are making significant strides toward returning for the upcoming season.
Trent Williams: Ready and Motivated for 15th Season
Veteran left tackle Trent Williams, entering his 15th NFL season (14th playing), missed the last seven games of 2024 due to an ankle injury. According to Lynch, Williams is fully prepared for a comeback.
"Trent’s playing, and he's ready. I think he's really motivated to come back," Lynch said. "That’s rarefied air that Trent lives in, and when you’re a player who has experienced playing at that level, you don’t want to return unless you can play at that level. I think we’re going to see a real motivated Trent Williams, and that’s a good thing for us."
Christian McCaffrey: On Track for Offseason Workouts
2023 AP NFL Offensive Player of the Year Christian McCaffrey battled Achilles tendonitis in training camp, which led to his placement on Injured Reserve before the season opener. After returning in Week 10, he suffered a knee injury in Week 13 against the Buffalo Bills, ending his season prematurely.
Despite the setbacks, McCaffrey is progressing well and is expected to participate in at least part of the offseason workout program.
"He’s doing great. Christian’s doing really well, and I think he was really frustrated with the way last season went," Lynch shared. "(He's) doing everything possible, just like he did last year. If he’s healthy, he’s going to have a tremendous season. That’s just what he does."
Brandon Aiyuk: Recovery Milestone Approaching
Wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk suffered a major knee injury in Week 5 against the Arizona Cardinals, tearing his ACL, MCL, and multiple ligaments. Lynch provided an optimistic update on Aiyuk’s rehabilitation, noting that a key recovery milestone is coming up in the next few weeks.
"He’s doing well," Lynch reported. "Our trainers who have been with him say he's progressing well. He’s putting in the work, and like I always say, elite athletes tend to heal faster. I think that’s what’s happening with Brandon."
What’s Next for the 49ers’ Playmakers?
With Williams set to return, McCaffrey on track for workouts, and Aiyuk progressing through rehab, the 49ers expect their star playmakers to be ready for the 2025 season. The team will monitor their recoveries closely, with updates expected throughout the offseason program.
